In this article, the important role that social workers can play in a medical-legal partnership’s development, process, and success is discussed. The authors argue that MLPs are greatly enhanced when they seek active engagement from social workers who can empower patients to use legal services and improve medical-legal collaborations. However, the authors also caution that MLP practitioners should be aware of the different ethical and legal obligations and professional cultures of the medical, social work, and legal professions.
